The core goal of this brief was a more connected and cohesive living space for a young family. Working through design solutions, we identified an opportunity to significantly improve the connection between the dwelling and its site by replacing the existing, poorly planned lean-to extension. The completed scheme provides a new open plan living space opening to a cosy courtyard at living level, and a loft that links the home to the existing underused upper terrace. Within the existing villa, bedrooms and bathroom have been rearranged and fully updated. An internal stair now reaches the basement, where a laundry has been added. This takes full advantage of the available space and creates a more practical and functional home. Insulation, windows, and heating and ventilation have been upgraded to modern standards, so the home is comfortable and thermally efficient.
